Discursive Construction of Ingroup and Outgroup Identity in the Bilateral Speech by President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez
DAVID, Ruth
This article investigates the speech by President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to determine the discursive strategies used to construct ingroup and outgroup identity, and the functions that these strategies perform. The bilateral speech delivered by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and President Joe Biden on June 28th, 2022 serve as the study’s data. Extracts from the speech were purposively sampled and subjected to critical analysis using Ruth Wodak’s (2009) Discourse Historical Approach. Findings reveal that nomination strategy is linguistically realised through reference, nominalization, material, mental and verbal processes. Nomination identifies the United States, Spain, Ukraine and Russia as the major social actors and categorizes the United States, Spain, and Ukraine as ingroup actors and Russia as outgroup actor. Through predication, the ingroup actors and their actions were metaphorically labelled positively using positive predicates and modifying adjectives. Conversely, the outgroup actor and its actions were framed negatively using negative predicates and modifying adjectives. The actions of the ingroup actors were legitimized using the topos of usefulness and advantage while those of the outgroup actor were delegitimized using the topoi of threat and danger. Perspectivisation, through the linguistic tools of reporting and describing, highlight the overt and conscious stance of ingroup actors as well as their involvement in the discourse while the factuality and validity of their propositions were registered through the intensification strategy linguistically realised through declarative sentences.

NAMING AND DESCRIBING AS CRITICAL STYLISTIC DEVICES IN SELECTED NOVELS OF HELON HABILA AND DUL JOHNSON
DAVID, Ruth; ANOSIKE, Comfort O.
This article analyzes Helon Habila's Waiting for an Angel and Measuring Time, as well as Dul Johnson's Across the Gulf and Deeper into the Night, using Lesly Jefferies' (2010) Critical Stylistic approach. The objective is to establish how both writers used the critical stylistic device of naming and describing to relate relevant sociopolitical situations in Nigeria. The qualitative study uses a descriptive method to analyze twelve extracts (3 from each novel) that were purposively chosen for the analysis. The findings reveal that the naming and describing technique is used in novels to package information, label characters' identities, and situate them in the social sphere. This technique also brings the reader's attention to the writers' ideological views. Finally, the creative implementation of the naming and describing device highlights ideologies such as religious fundamentalism, patriarchy, militarism, modern and traditional customs

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND CAPITAL MARKET DEVELOPMENT: THE MODERATING IMPACT OF INFLATION

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND CAPITAL MARKET DEVELOPMENT: THE MODERATING IMPACT OF INFLATION
OKOLI, Theresa
ABSTRACT
The study examines the moderating impact of inflation on the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and capital market development in Nigeria from 1985 to 2019. Ex-post facto research design was adopted by the study while Ordinary least square was used to determine the relationship between the variables. The study found that foreign direct investment has positive significant impact on market capitalization while moderated foreign direct investment has positive but insignificant impact on market capitalization. From the findings, the study concludes that foreign direct investment is a significant factor that affected Nigeria capital market but if foreign direct investment is moderated, it has insignificant impact on Nigeria capital market. Based on this, the study recommends that the interactive effects explain that FDI has a positive impact on MC and the inflation rate insignificantly influences the MC. Therefore, if at least a positive market capitalization is to be maintained, the rate of inflation should at least be at the threshold level if not, there will be an insignificant market capitalization. With the relevance of inflation in this study, the government should be very proactive in enacting policies to ensure moderate inflation rate that would draw foreign investors and pin down the already established ones.
